WASHINGTON, D.C. – At today’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked about the prolonged closure of the border between the United States and Canada – an issue that has devastated residents of Minnesota’s Northwest Angle – and showed with her answer just how little attention the Biden Administration has paid to this problem. In response, Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach (MN-7) issued the following statement:
“There is a crisis at the northern border, but the press secretary’s comments today demonstrate the lack of urgency the Biden White House has concerning this issue. While the U.S. government rents hotel rooms for migrants illegally crossing the southern border, this administration won’t lift a finger to help American citizens who just want their government to listen.
“Our own government’s international travel guidance – presumably curated from the very ‘medical experts’ of which the press secretary speaks – indicates that fully vaccinated individuals can travel internationally without a quarantine period. Even so, the Canadian restrictions have only gotten stricter.
“American families are separated, lives and livelihoods are on hold, and generational businesses have been brought to the brink of bankruptcy. My colleagues and I have repeatedly attempted to elevate this issue – which can only be solved through a bilateral agreement at the highest level – to no avail.
“What is it going to take to get this administration’s attention?”
