WASHINGTON, D.C. — Representative Michelle Fischbach (MN-07) introduced the Federal Funds Whistleblower Protection Extension Act to safeguard taxpayer dollars by expanding federal whistleblower protections to state and local government employees, contractors, and subcontractors. This legislation ensures accountability for federal funds by protecting those who report fraud, waste, and abuse and by strictly prohibiting government officials from retaliating against whistleblowers.

This Act follows a House Oversight Committee hearing that Representative Fischbach waived onto, where it was confirmed by Minnesota State Representatives that there are currently no criminal penalties for government officials who retaliate against those who speak out against funding mismanagement.

"Minnesotans have watched in horror as historic levels of fraud have gone unchecked under the watch of Governor Walz and Attorney General Ellison, who many Minnesotans feel have been more focused on retaliating against and silencing whistleblowers than addressing the corruption under their own noses," said Rep. Fischbach.

Rep. Fischbach's bill directly addresses the culture of fear that Walz and Ellison have allegedly created in Minnesota. The Congresswoman made it clear that professional discipline is no longer enough to deter the silencing of whistleblowers.

"From the Feeding Our Future scandal to the systemic oversight failures in Medicaid and SNAP distribution, it is clear that when state leadership fails to hold bad actors accountable, the burden falls on whistleblowers. In many cases, these whistleblowers aren't just ignored; they are fired, blacklisted, and silenced," continued Rep. Fischbach. Let me be very clear: if Governor Walz, Attorney General Ellison, or anyone in their administrations knowingly retaliated against these whistleblowers, they deserve to face more than just a headline. They deserve jail time. My bill ensures that any state official who knowingly tries to ruin a whistleblower's life to protect a political narrative will face up to five years in federal prison."

By requiring state and local governments to comply with these protections as a condition for receiving federal funding, this legislation ensures that any organization benefiting from taxpayer dollars respects the transparency and oversight necessary to root out the gross mismanagement that has plagued state-administered programs. Establishing these penalties is a significant step toward restoring public trust and ensuring federal resources are used for their intended purposes, rather than being siphoned off by fraud or protected by political intimidation.
