Washington, D.C - Yesterday, in a 214-208 vote, the House passed Congresswoman Fischbach's legislation, H.R. 6918, the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act.

“Pregnancy centers support expectant mothers and their unborn children, offering a wide range of support. Unfortunately, this Administration is trying to push its anti-woman, anti-abortion agenda, this time taking aim at these vital centers,” said Congresswoman Fischbach (MN-07). “In a new proposed rule, the Department of Health and Human Services is singling out pregnancy centers trying to block important TANF funding from these resources and instead direct it towards facilities that provide abortions. I introduced the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act to ensure pregnancy centers cannot be excluded or restricted from receiving TANF funding. Conservatives are here for unborn babies and their mothers, and I am proud my colleagues voted to ensure those moms are supported throughout their pregnancy and empowered to raise their families.”

Background: The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program provides $16.5 billion annually to support assistance activities for needy families. Last Fall, the Department of Health and Human Services proposed a rule to modify allowable uses of TANF that singles out pregnancy centers in a way that could prevent states from using these funds for these vital care centers. The Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act prohibits the Department of Health and Human Services from keeping TANF dollars from being used to support pregnancy centers.
