Washington, D.C. - In a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court ruled that federal law does not authorize the Department of Education to forgive student debt.
"President Biden's student loan 'forgiveness' scheme was an attempted abuse of power, would have done nothing to address the rising cost of education, and would have been a slap in the face to every person who took on extra jobs during college, already paid off their debts, or chose not to go to college," said Rep. Fischbach (MN-07). "I am thankful to the Supreme Court for upholding the rule of law and preventing President Biden from abusing executive powers in order to deliver on a campaign promise."
Background: In August 2022, President Biden announced he would bypass Congress's authority over federal spending in order to "forgive" student debt. Shortly after the announcement, six states sued Joe Biden, challenging the scheme in Biden v. Nebraska, and the Supreme Court decided to take up the case.
