WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 4. In response, Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach (MN-07) issued the following statement:
“Passed under the guise of ‘updating’ the Voting Rights Act of 1965, H.R. 4 is an unprecedented power grab that empowers the attorney general to bully states and strips state and local governments of the ability to manage their own elections. The original Voting Rights Act is working as intended: more Americans from minority communities are voting than ever before and voter registration remains high. While President Biden attempts to justify the bill’s unconstitutional and extraordinary measures, state and local elections officials – who saw record turnout in 2020 – aren’t buying it. Such an overreaching bill is unnecessary.
“I will continue to push for election safeguards that make it easy to vote and hard to cheat.”
