WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021, and H.R. 1446, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021. In response, Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach (MN-7) issued the following statement:

“I oppose any attempt to restrict the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans, and that’s exactly what these bills do.

“Universal background checks criminalize the private transfer of firearms, making it nearly impossible for law-abiding gun owners to acquire, or even borrow or lend, firearms. These bills also give the federal government the ability to delay a firearm transfer indefinitely without any proof that the person is ineligible to possess a firearm.

“These bills do not stop criminals from getting guns, but they do undermine the ability of my constituents – many of whom are hunters and sportsmen – to exercise their Second Amendment rights.”
