Washington, D.C. - This week, the House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act in honor of the nursing student who was murdered by a an illegal alien who had previously been cited for shoplifting. This bill requires detention of illegal aliens who commit theft and allows a state to sue the federal government for not enforcing border laws.
"In the first week of this Congress, House Republicans are already taking action on the priorities the American people care about, passing the Laken Riley Act, to detain and deport criminal illegal aliens," said Rep. Fischbach (MN-07). "When this bill was introduced last year, Senate Democrats and the White House ignored it. This week, I'm saddened and surprised to say, there were still 159 House Democrats who voted against it. Had the policies in this bill been in place before Laken Riley's tragic murder, local authorities would have reported her killer to ICE before he had the opportunity to commit this heinous crime and Laken would still be alive today. It is commonsense legislation to keep our communities safe. I look forward to passing much more commonsense legislation this year."
